About St. John the Evangelist
(Our Namesake)
At the time of its founding in 1876 Bishop Brown of the new Fond du Lac Diocese dedicated this
congregation to God and in honor of Saint John the Evangelist. Naming congregations in honor
of Saint John the Evangelist was common and especially appropriate for new parishes as the
church expanded westward and brought the church to developing communities. Saint John the
Evangelist was the youngest of the apostles and believed to be the author of the Gospel of
John, and perhaps the Book of Revelation and the epistles named after Saint John. In early days
of the church the apostles were depicted in art form, John as an eagle, because his writings
describe Jesus Christ who came from above, soars and brings light to the world. You will notice
the eagle symbolism in the floor of the church, in stained glass windows and in the wooden
lectern from which we read the Word of God. We are encouraged to follow the theology of his
writings and his zeal for spreading the Word of God. We celebrate the feast of Saint John each December 27th.
